A cold war is a conflict between nations that doesn't result in direct military action - basically, there are no soldiers combating each other.
The best example of a Cold War was between the U.S.S.R. and the United States, lasting from 1947-1991. The war began primarily because the two superpowers had different forms of government that they were trying to impose on other nations. The United States was a capitalist country, and the U.S.S.R. was a communist union.
After WWII, both the United States and the U.S.S.R were trying to convince other countries to take up their (rather contradictory) forms of government, so tensions rose between them.
The Cold War increased the development in atomic weapons, and brought about the space race of the 50's and 60's.
When communism fell in 1991, and the Cold War ended.
