Calorimetry is the technique used to measure the heat transfer.

Explanation:

A calorimeter is a device or equipment utilized to measure the heat of a reaction or heated compound. The temperature difference allows to evaluate the heat transferred in the reaction or heated compound.

NOTES
The heat capacity of the calorimeter is determined by transferring a known amount of heat into it and measuring its temperature increase. Because the temperature differences are very small, extreme sensitive thermometers are required for these measurements.

A calorimeter can be built at the school to measure the heat transfer of a metal into the water; Google Coffee Cup Calorimetry.
