Angiosperms are popularly termed flowering plants . Flowers are the reproductive structures produced to carry out sexual reproduction. .

A flower has sepals and petals which are not directly concerned with reproduction. Stamens and carpels are the reproductive structures of flower.

Stamen is the male part of the flower . It produces pollen grains in anther lobes. At maturity, anther dehisces to liberate pollen grains.

Carpels are the female part of the flower . One or more carpels may be fused to form pistil, which is differentiated into ovary, style and stigma. Ovules are present inside ovary. Each ovule contains a female gamete.

Pollen grains after dehiscence of the anther are transferred to the stigma of same or different flower. This transfer of pollen to stigma is termed pollination , which may be brought about by different agencies, such as wind, insects etc.

The pollen grains germinate on reaching the stigma to form the pollen tube that grows through style and finally reaches ovary and enters ovule.

Pollen tube contains male gamete that fuses with the female gamete in ovule to form oospore or fertilized egg.

The ovule after fertilization ripens into seed that encloses the embryo and the ovary containing ovules ripens into fruit. The seeds are liberated with the dehiscence of the fruit. The seed germinates to form new seedling after falling on suitable substrate.
