Fort Sumter is in South Carolina, nowhere near the Mississippi. You may be referring to the capture of Vicksburg. The Civil War began at Fort Sumter.

Explanation:

Vicksburg fell on July 4th, 1863, effectively cutting Confederacy from Texas. Texas made a separate peace and the Texan troops went home. The Confederacy was cut off from the supplies and horses from Texas. Eventually the Civil War in the West led to Sherman's March to the Sea which destroyed much of Georgia's farming area which was the breadbasket of the South.

A truly bad supply situation affected Robert Lee's Army in Virginia. Grant's success in the West led to his Leadership of the Union Army near Washington, DC. Lee also lost at Gettysburg around the same time as Vicksburg. There was no hope for the Confederacy afterward although the fighting continued into 1865.
