Veins are the vessels that take blood back to the heart. Arteries are the vessels that distribute oxygenated blood (with the exception of pulmonary and umbilical arteries) to the rest of the body.

Explanation:

Most veins carry deoxygenated blood from tissues back to the heart. Veins are less muscular than arteries and are closer to the skin. This is why phlebotomists draw blood from the veins. There are also valves in veins to prevent backflow (reverse flow of blood).

Arteries carry oxygenated blood and nutrients to tissues. They also remove carbon dioxide, waste, maintain proper pH levels, and circulate proteins about.
