#gamma#-rays are at such high energy that they need meters of concrete or centimeters of lead to be stopped, due to their high penetrating power.

Despite being rather low in ionizing power, #gamma#-rays can still hurt you by interacting with your cells and DNA, causing mutations and likely leading to cancer.

The best way to be safe from #gamma#- rays is to place a very dense object between you and the #gamma#-source, but a jacket or sunscreen would not be sufficient.
