Every complex number #x + yi# has a real part, denoted #x#, and an imaginary part, denoted #y#. Since there are only two parts to any complex number, these parts can be represented on a 2-D Cartesian grid.

It has been agreed that the real part, #x#, is plotted along the horizontal axis, while the imaginary part, #y#, gets plotted along the vertical axis.

For the given complex number, #z= –5sqrt3 - 5i#, we have #x = –5sqrt3# and #y=–5#. The location of this point in the complex plane is thus #5sqrt3# units left and #5# units down from the origin.
graph{(x+5sqrt(3))^2+(y+5)^2=0.02 [-10, 10, -8, 2]}
