The numbers are 34 and -14.

Explanation:

Assume the two numbers are x and y.

x + y = 20

Rearrange to get:

x = 20 - y

Then use the second equation:

x - y = 48

Rearrange to get:

x = 48 + y

Then sub them into each other to get the formula:

20 - y = 48 + y

Solve:

2y = -28

y = -14

Go back to your first rearranged equation and plug y in.

x = 20 - (-14)

x = 34

Therefore, x and y are 34 and -14, respectively.
