The nucleus is where DNA is stored within the cell in strands called chromosomes. These chromosomes contain sections of DNA called genes which code for specific proteins.

The nucleus is often referred to as the "brain of the cell" due to its role in controlling activities within the cell. The nucleus is where DNA sequences are transcribed into mRNA (messenger RNA) which move to the ribosomes and used in the manufacture of proteins.
