Some people especially on the right were against the idea that the government should intervene in the economy. They were called the Old Right, they had already opposed the Ne Deal in the thirties.

They claimed such an intervention was detrimental to individual liberties and constituted a betrayal of American values notably freedom. Such social protections meant that new taxes had to be created.

Later people blamed Johnson for introducing this policy by targetting Blacks as he longed to see them serve in Vietnam.
