For small populations - such as a class - it is best to simply obtain answers from ALL of the students. If a few are unavailable you can see if their omission affects the data accuracy significantly before proceeding with the analysis.

This type of question may best be posed as an open-ended single response. That is, simply ask "How many servings of fruits or vegetables do you eat in a day?" You can then sort and analyze the responses in any way that you like.
