Why are neurons amitotic?

Neurone are usually amitotic i.e. they do not divide like other cells.

Explanation:

The cell body of neurons contains all the membrane bound organelles that carry out the metabolic functions of the neuron. They have all the cell organelles except centrioles.

Most neurons cannot divide. Except for a few afferent and efferent neurons they usually do not regenerate. Their DNA copying is blocked.

So if a neuron is destroyed, it cannot be replaced by mitosis. They are protected from damage by the glial cell.
