Water is unique in having maximum density at 4 degree Celsius, which means water at bottom of a water body doesn't turn into ice ever even when air temperature plunges. Topmost layer of water freezes and ice remains on top (being lesser in density than water) allowing aquatic life to survive under ice in winter.
