In heterozygous fern there are two alleles controlling the trait, the dominant allele and recessive allele

Explanation:

The gene controlling a trait has two alternate alleles.

According to Mendel' s law of Dominance when two alternative alleles are present together ( heterozygous ). one of the alleles that expresses itself is called dominant allele and the other allele that is not able to express itself, though present, is called recessive allele .

Thus in a heterozygous fern plant having two alternate alleles controlling a particular trait present together, one of these is the dominant allele that expresses itself in phenotype and the other allele that does not express phenotypically is called recessive allele
