Because the spoken form is often not immediately apparent from the written form...

Explanation:

Concerning the rhythm, it is not immediately apparent from the written form of a word how many syllables it has.

For example:

  • "strengthened" has two syllables.

  • "banana" has three syllables.

Concerning the rhyme, words with quite different spelling may have similar sounding endings (at least in a some dialects):

For example:

  • "terror" and "thorough"

  • "cough" and "ruff"

  • "close" and "rows"
