The conjugate acid of the hypochlorite ion, #ClO^(-)#, is hypochlorous acid, #HClO#.

In aqueous solution, the hypochlorite anion can act as a base and accept a proton from water, which in turn will act as an acid.

The following equilibrium reaction will be established

#underbrace(ClO_((aq))^(-))_(color(blue)("base")) + H_2O_((l)) rightleftharpoons underbrace(HClO_((aq)))_(color(green)("conjugate acid")) + OH_text((aq])^(-)#
