How do you generate a good nucleophile?

Jun 22, 2015

A common way is to deprotonate a molecule, such as $E t O H \to E t {O}^{-} + {H}^{+}$

where $E t O H = C {H}_{3} C {H}_{2} O H$

A more interesting way is to put a molecule in solution with an alkali salt such as $L i C l$, so something like butyllithium is a great nucleophile.

${\left(C {H}_{3} C {H}_{2} C {H}_{2} C {H}_{2}\right)}^{-} L {i}^{+}$ $\implies$ $\text{BuLi}$ abbreviation

or even:

$N {a}^{+} {H}^{-}$
