Electrons are not bound as tightly to the nucleus as more inner electrons are. Distance is a factor with electric charges. The strength of an electric field is inversely proportional to the distance squared.

Also, ionization energy plays a role. Ionization energy measures how much energy is needed to allow for an atom to release an electron. This is lower for bigger atoms.
