# What is the function of a "buffet", or rather a "buffer"?

Apr 24, 2016

A buffer solution moderates gross changes in solution $p H$.

#### Explanation:

A $\text{buffer solution}$ is a mixture of a weak acid and it conjugate base in appreciable quantities. It acts to reduce gross changes in solution $p H$. Biochemical systems are extensively buffered.

For such a solution:

$p H = p {K}_{a} + {\log}_{10} \left\{\frac{\left[{A}^{-}\right]}{\left[H A\right]}\right\}$

It is clear that at the point of half equivalence, i.e. $\left[{A}^{-}\right] = \left[H A\right]$, then $p H = p {K}_{a}$, because ${\log}_{10} 1 = 0$

On the other hand, a $\text{buffet}$, especially an all you can eat buffet, is where you go to stuff your face.
