A buffer solution moderates gross changes in solution #pH#.

Explanation:

A #"buffer solution"# is a mixture of a weak acid and it conjugate base in appreciable quantities. It acts to reduce gross changes in solution #pH#. Biochemical systems are extensively buffered.

For such a solution:

#pH=pK_a + log_10{[[A^-]]/[[HA]]}#

It is clear that at the point of half equivalence, i.e. #[A^-]=[HA]#, then #pH=pK_a#, because #log_(10)1=0#

On the other hand, a #"buffet"#, especially an all you can eat buffet, is where you go to stuff your face.
