The question already addresses this but if we compare the squirrel to the deer we can see that the deer is much larger than the squirrel (unless we're talking about irradiated super-mutant squirrels).
All joking aside, we can also compare the two organisms at the cellular level. The deer, since it is a much larger organism, has many more cells. Each cell requires energy to function and the more cells an organism has, assuming that the organisms being compared are eating the same type of food (some foods are more calorie dense than others), the more food it needs to consume.
