Does the water that comes from taps in our homes meet safety regulations?

If it didn't I would want to know why.
Explanation:
The water that comes out from a tap is usually very pure. When I think of my career, I have lived in some pretty low dives. Yet all of them were connected to the water supply, and this water supply was potable. And you open a tap, and you have water for drinking and bathing right in your home.
How many of our ancestors had this access; certainly our parents, and our grandparents. And our great grandparents? And their parents? Perhaps not.
