Explanation:

The current theory at the time of Rutherford was that the atom was like a pudding with positive and negative particles distributed through out the substance of the atom.

Rutherford fired a charged proton into the atom hoping to get kind of an x-ray diagram of the inside of the atom. Instead most of this "bullets" passed through with no effect but others bounce back are were reflected sharply to one side.

The results indicated that the predictions ( hypothesis) based on the Thompson model of the atom were wrong. The implications were that the greatest part of the volume of an atom was essentially empty but that the center of the atom was unexpectedly dense and positive.

The results lead to the conclusion that the atom had a dense center called the nucleus.
