The $\text{buffer equation}$ is:...

$p H = p {K}_{a} + {\log}_{10} \left\{\frac{\left[{A}^{-}\right]}{\left[H A\right]}\right\}$

Explanation:

A mixture of a weak acid and its conjugate base in appreciable quantities has a $p H$ close to the $p {K}_{a}$ of the weak acid. It acts to resist gross changes in $p H$. Biological systems, including our own, tend to be extensively buffered, in order to provide stability to our biochemistry.
