Polyatomic ion do carry an electric charge. They can and do exist on their own.
Explanation:
The whole technique of mass spectroscopy is concerned with the ionization of polyatomic species, molecules in other words, and accurately measuring their mass (here the ions are put into a magnetic bottle!). Clearly these are real species, but they have a very short existence.
