# Is SF_4 electron precise?

Nov 5, 2016

As far as I know, the Lewis structure of $S {F}_{4}$, which is a very nasty molecule, is electron precise.

#### Explanation:

The electron pairs around sulfur in $S {F}_{4}$ adopt a trigonal planar geometry to give a $\text{see-saw}$ molecular geometry in which axial and equatorial fluoride ligands have a soft mechanism of exchange by pseudorotation.

The singlet observed in the room temperature ""^19F $N M R$ spectrum of the molecule reflects this exchange, however, these can be frozen out at lower temperature.
