Explanation:

Considering that in this experiment the important part was the nucleus (used to interact with the positive "bullets" of alpha particles fired at it) I would say that because the hydrogen has only one proton (against the 79 of gold) and a gas on top of it (no rigid, cristal-like structure) probably it would have been like to fire a gun shot against a mosquito and expect it to bounce back!

Mind you this is my opinion...not supported by references!
