Alburnum conducts water from the roots to the leaves.


  1. There are two types of woods in the higher plants, the heartwood or duramen and sapwood or alburnum.
  2. Sapwood or alburnum is the first formed wood in the plant bodies. The alburnums are made up majority of living cells/tissues and help the conduction of water from the root system to the shoot systems.
  3. Finally, the alburnum or sap wood becomes heartwood by the deposition of different chemicals in the lumen of cells or on the walls of the cells. Thank you
