# What is 1% of 200?

Mar 1, 2017

"Percent" or "%" means "out of 100" or "per 100", Therefore 1% can be written as $\frac{1}{100}$.

When dealing with percents the word "of" means "times" or "to multiply".

Now, let's call the number we are taking the percent of $n$.

Let's also call our answer $a$.

Putting this altogether we can write this equation and solve for $n$ while keeping the equation balanced:

$a = \frac{1}{100} \times n$

$a = \frac{1 \times n}{100}$

For this example because we are working with 1% we can further simplify to:

$a = \frac{n}{100}$

So, if we were looking for 1% of 200 it would be:

$a = \frac{1}{100} \times 200$

$a = \frac{1 \times 200}{100}$

$a = \frac{200}{100}$

$a = 2$

Therefore $2$ is 1% of 200.
