superimposition

Explanation:

The idea or law of superimposition is logical the older layer must have been laid down first for the upper layers to be laid down on top of the bottom.

However there are many places in the geological record where the upper layers is regarded as being older than the layers underneath them. The dating is made because of the fossils found in the layers even thought the dating contradicts the law of superimposition.
