Usually liquid (l), but not aqueous (aq), because this refers to a solution in water, not to the water itself.


In general a neutralization goes like:

#H^+(aq) + OH^(-)(aq) ->H_2O(l)#

or more correctly:

#H_3O^+(aq) + OH^(-)(aq) ->2H_2O(l)#

But some reactions may create so much heat, that the water will vent off as steam (g).
