Crossing over takes place during Meiosis I of gamete formation.

There is physical exchange of chromosomal parts between non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes during crossing over.


The process helps to produce new allelic recombination. After Meiosis II, of all the gametes produced, maximum of 50% receive recombinants.
