A longitudinal wave causes its medium to move in what direction?

The medium of the wave doesn't really move. The constituent particles vibrate propagating the displacement from one region to another in the medium.

For a longitudinal wave (like sound) the disturbance oscillates parallel to the direction of the wave propagation.
