No it is possible for one to get confused between stars and planets but galaxies look like nebulae and never look like stars.

Explanation:

The knowledge that galaxies are collection of stars is fairly recent. It is not even 100 years since we knew what galaxies are. With naked eye one can see at least three galaxies Andromeda Nebula (M31), Large Magellenic Cloud and Small Magellenic Cloud. As their name indicates they appear like nebulae/clouds. So there is no way galaxies could be mistaken for stars. It is possible for faint comets to look like galaxies but not stars.
