Atoms were thought to be indivisible. They were thought to be the smallest unit of matter. Through various experiments scientists concluded that an atom consists of even smaller particles called subatomic particles. An atom consists of three subatomic particles: electrons, protons and neutrons.

Electrons are the negative charged particles, very tiny, have negligible mass, and are found outside the nucleus in orbitals. Protons are the positively charged particles, have greater mass than an electron, and are found in the center of an atom inside the nucleus. Neutrons are the neutral particles, have mass comparable to proton, neutrons are located inside the nucleus.

Chemists are pretty good at knocking electrons off of atoms through the addition of energy, but we just don't have enough energy available to pull protons and neutrons apart. For that, we count on our friends, the physicists, who are inexplicably given millions of dollars to build big machines that do exactly that.
