Even with the naked eye you can make out the centre of the Andromeda galaxy (approximately 2.5 million light years away) as a fuzzy patch of light. The whole Andromeda galaxy subtends about 3×1, i.e. it is about 6 times the apparent width of the sun or moon.

With the aid of ground based telescopes we can observe many galaxies in some detail.
