protons are blocked in the crystal lattice of the metal. are the electrons that carry the current. Unfortunately in XIX centuury, when electricity was discoverd they didn'still know as the material was done and they didn't know electrons neither or the protons so when they had to chose a direction for the flow of current, they chosed from the positive pole to the negative one. They had the 50% of the probabilities to guess and they wrong. So in the electric circuit is draw the current in the inverse direction at the electrons flow
