Do reduction and oxidation occur simultaneously in a redox reaction?

We conceive of redox reactions as the transfer of electrons. This is a convenient FICTION that allows us to balance such reactions (reasonably) straightforwardly. As in all chemical reactions, both MASS and CHARGE must be balanced if it is to represent physical reality.
