The extreme value, a minimum is #2#, when #x=-1#.

Explanation:

We can write #y=x^2+2x+3# as

#y=x^2+2x+1+2#

= #(x+1)^2+2#

Now as #(x+1)^2# is always positive and its minimum value is #0#, when #x=-1#, the minimum value of #y=x^2+2x+3# is #2# when #x=-1#.
