# How can you raise the pH of acidic soil?

Agricultural lime ($C a C {O}_{3} \text{ or } M g C {O}_{3}$) is regularly added to soils to adjust $p H$. Some plants and vegetables prefer an acidic soil (cf. tomatoes), whereas other plants prefer limy (alkaline) soils, e.g. beans, carrots. Note that when we talk of acid/alkaline soils, the $p H$ range would not fall too far from $7$.
