Agricultural lime (#CaCO_3" or " MgCO_3#) is regularly added to soils to adjust #pH#. Some plants and vegetables prefer an acidic soil (cf. tomatoes), whereas other plants prefer limy (alkaline) soils, e.g. beans, carrots. Note that when we talk of acid/alkaline soils, the #pH# range would not fall too far from #7#.
