It caused him to mistrust many of his allies and cause rifts in the gov't.

Explanation:

Chiang had a massive fear of Communists, and was so paranoid he saw them everywhere. He would execute, imprison, and/or dismiss people he believed to be Communists. This weakened the Nationalist gov't, which made it easier for Mao Zedong to take over.
