How do lipids affect the cell membrane?

Lipids are an important component to our cell membrane , as we know there is presence of Lipid Bilayer in the cell membrane , which makes it impermeable to water.
So , water soluble substances will face difficulty in crossing the cell membrane , however it is permeable to hydrophobic substances.
