# How do you calculate the oxidation state of carbon?

For inorganic carbon, $C {O}_{2}$, and $C {O}_{3}^{2 -}$, oxidation states are fairly easy to assign. For organic compounds, the process is more difficult but still doable. Carbon can assume oxidation states of $C \left(- I V\right)$ to $C \left(+ I V\right)$. See the link, and if there are queries come back. The link also defines the $\text{oxidation state}$ .
