multiply both sides of the equation by 10

we have
#10a/b=3.33333333....#second equation

subtract now the first from the second equation

#10a/b-a/b=3.333333333....-0.33333333....#

#9a/b=3#

divide both sides by 9

therefore #-0.33333333=-1/3#
