5 meters

Explanation:

1 m = 100 cm

2 m = 200 cm

3 m = 300 cm

.
.
.

5 m = 500 cm

$500 \cancel{c m} \times \frac{1 m}{100 \cancel{c m}} = 5 m$

If you ever get confused by conversions use ratio

500 centimetres = 5 metres

Explanation:

Known: 1 metre = 100 centimetres

Write the ratio in fraction form giving:

$\left(\text{1 metre")/("100 centimetres}\right)$

But we need 500 centimetres so it is correct to write:

$\left(\text{1 metre")/("100 centimetres") =("unknown metres")/("500}\right)$

Looking at the bottom numbers (denominators) we need to be able to change the 100 into 500

Multiply by 1 but in the form of $1 = \frac{5}{5}$

$\left[\frac{1}{100} \times 1\right] = \left(\text{unknown metres")/("500}\right)$

$\left[\frac{1}{100} \times \frac{5}{5}\right] = \left(\text{unknown metres")/("500}\right)$

$\left[\frac{\textcolor{red}{5}}{\textcolor{b l u e}{500}}\right] = \left(\text{unknown metres")/("500}\right)$

$\text{So "color(blue)(500)" centimetres is " color(red)(5)" metres}$
