Actually the square brackets in the first part aren't neccessary.
We first clear the brackets:

Explanation:

`=(13*4^2)-(4*17:2)`
Then the powers:
`=(13*16)-(4*17:2)`
Then the multiplications and divisions (two groups!):
`=208-34`
Finally the adding and subtracting:
`=174`

Note that all the brackets I put in the explanation are superfluous, they were just put there for clarity (what belongs together?).
