# How do you evaluate the expression x divided by 1.2 for the given value of x=1.8?

Mar 31, 2016

$\frac{3}{2}$

#### Explanation:

Write as $\frac{x}{1.2}$

For $x = 1.8 \text{ we have } \frac{1.8}{1.2}$

To make the maths easier apply the principle of ratios in that

$\frac{1.8}{1.2} \text{ "=" "(1.8xx10)/(1.2xx10)" "=" } \frac{18}{12}$

In effect you are multiplying by 1 but in the form of $1 = \frac{10}{10}$
Anything multiplied by 1 does not change its intrinsic value.

'~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

But $\frac{18}{12} = \frac{18 \div 6}{12 \div 6} = \frac{3}{2}$
