Explanation:

Absolute value of a number is its value sans its sign, positive or negative i.e. for #+17#, it is #17# and for #-17# to it is #17#.

Number #-8# has negative sign and hence, we can say that #|-8|=8#.

Graphically, absolute value of a number can be described as distance of its location on real number line from origin i.e. point described as #0#, irrespective of its direction, whether towards positive or negative side of origin.
