The average rate of change is $(y_2-y_1)/(x_2-x_1)$ . (Yes. It is the same as the slope.)

In this question, $x_1 = -1$ , so $y_1 = 2$

ans $x_2 = 3$ , so $y_2=10$ .

$(y_2-y_1)/(x_2-x_1) = (10-2)/(3-(-1)) = 8/4=2$
