Mar 15, 2018

Do this the same a you would a positive number. And, after putting it in scientific notation put the negative sign by the leading number.

#### Explanation:

Example 1:

$- 123.456$ in scientific notation would be:

$- \left(123.456\right) \implies - \left(1.23456 \times {10}^{2}\right) \implies - 1.23456 \times {10}^{2}$

Example 2:

$- 0.00123$ in scientific notation would be:

$- \left(0.00123\right) \implies - \left(1.23 \times {10}^{-} 3\right) \implies - 1.23 \times {10}^{-} 3$
