You can do it another way, by the new AC Method to solve quadratic equation (Google, Yahoo Search)
#y = x^2 + 5x - 36 = 0#.
Find 2 numbers knowing sum (-5) and Product (-36).
Compose factor pairs of (-36) and find the pair whose sum is (5) or (-5). a and c have different signs. Proceed: (-2, 18)(-3, 12)(-4, 9). This last sum is 9 - 4 = 5 = b . Then the 2 real roots are: 4 and -9.

Reminder, If the last sum is (4 - 9 = -5 = -b ), then the 2 real roots are -4 and 9.
